TBR-180A is an update version of the TBR-180. Since 180 is a modified Kenwood TK-385, it uses some imported chips and other components. TBR-180A replaced all imported components with domestic produced chips and other components. As a result, the firmware is also rewritten. The functionality and operation keep the same as that of a TBR-180.
There are two types of TBR-180A, the exterior of one is almost the same as that of a TBR-180, the other type has updated exterior. Again, the functionality and operation are the same.
The accessories (antenna, battery, earphone and charger) are the same as that of TBR-180, however, the configuration software is different, since the firmware is rewritten.
The TBR-180A and TBR-180 have long retired from the front line service of PLA and replaced by TBR-180B. As of now (2025), the TBR-180B is also retired and replaced by TBR-180E1/E2, or newer type of communication devices.
